The creation of one of a bowl begins with a vision or concept for the finished product. I hand select the various woods, cut and sand the layered pieces to size, and layer them with an eye to color, thickness, and sequence that are pleasing to the eye.
I imagine a shape for the bowl and glue up the stacked laminations to turn on the lathe. A bowl sometimes morphs into a variation suggested by the wood itself as the bowl is being turned. Last I apply several coats of finish and wax.
All bowls are 4.5" - 5" in diameter
The height of horizontal laminated bowls varies and a is rarely more than 3".
Note that the "V series bowls are shorter at around 1.75" tall.
I am never quite sure of the exact finished product until the turning process is completed.
So even though I might use the same woods in the same order for another bowl the finished product is truly one of a kind.
My bowls are best appreciated using a hands-on approach.
We encourage you to call and make an appointment to stop by the studio to see current inventory.
No drop-ins please.
Note that the holly bowls sell for slightly more than the other laminated bowls.
Quality Holly wood is in limited supply and high demand and our cost is high - when we can even get it.
Holly lumber sells so quickly that my supplier does not even put holly on his website but does send a note to established customers when he gets some.
